Publicado originalmente por Pan Books en formato de bolsillo, el libro toma su título de Milliways, el Restaurante del Fin del Universo, uno de los escenarios más memorables de la saga. Como nota curiosa, la obra se inspira en la canción «Grand Hotel» de la banda británica de rock Procol Harum.
