Si tratta di un'opera più cupa rispetto alle tre precedenti raccolte di racconti («The Amateur Cracksman», «The Black Mask» e «A Thief in the Night»). Al suo interno un Raffles più cinico scopre che un usuraio corrotto, il signor Brigstock, sta intrappolando i giovani figli delle famiglie benestanti con interessi esorbitanti sui suoi prestiti, e spetta a lui insegnargli una lezione.
