L’opera esordì negli Stati Uniti nel 1946 per mano di Dodd, Mead & Co., per poi essere pubblicata nel Regno Unito nel novembre dello stesso anno dal Collins Crime Club. L’edizione statunitense era in vendita a 2,50 dollari, mentre quella britannica costava otto scellini e sei pence, indicati anche nella notazione 8/6. Nel 1954 la casa editrice statunitense Dell Books pubblicò una edizione tascabile del romanzo, modificandone il titolo in Murder after Hours.
