《海华沙之歌》的故事，源自北美印第安诸部族口耳相传的神话传说，其中又以北密歇根、威斯康星与明尼苏达一带奥吉布瓦人的故事最为动听。这些珍贵的素材，由著名历史学家、拓荒探险家与地质学家亨利·罗·斯库克拉夫特一一采录。他曾于1836年至1841年间，担任密歇根州的印第安事务总监。 斯库克拉夫特的妻子简·约翰斯顿，拥有一位极美的奥吉布瓦本名——O-bah-bahm-wawa-ge-zhe-go-qua，意为"星辰划过天际时所发出的声响之女"。简的父亲约翰·约翰斯顿，是早年旅居此地的爱尔兰皮毛商；她的母亲O-shau-gus-coday-way-qua（意为"碧色草原之女"），则是Waub-o-jeeg（意为"白衣渔者"）的女儿——这位瓦布奥杰格，曾是威斯康星州拉波因特奥吉布瓦部落的酋长。 简与母亲并肩走访、考辨、汇编，将口耳相传的传说一一落实于纸页。斯库克拉夫特后来结集出版的《阿尔吉克研究》（1839年）及其1856年修订版《海华沙的神话》，其核心素材正源自这对母女的不懈耕耘。而后者，又恰好成为朗费罗撰写《海华沙之歌》时依凭的蓝本。
