About

Henry Fielding (1707–1754) was an English novelist, playwright, and magistrate, widely regarded as one of the founders of the English novel. Born in Somerset and educated at Eton, he wrote satirical plays for the London stage before turning to prose fiction. His landmark novel "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling" (1749) helped establish the comic novel form in English letters, and he later served as a justice of the peace, founding the Bow Street Runners, the precursors to the modern police.
