アウグスティヌスは、悪を肯定的な原理と見なすマナ教のような異端者に対して、すべての被造物の本質的な善性を擁護する。すべての被造物はそれ自体の本性において良く、全体美に仕える。害に見えるものも、適切な文脈で考慮すれば善である。毒さえも薬になりうる。過失は本性にあるのではなく、私たちの誤用にある。
